Abstract

The neutron energy spectra from 9Be(γ, n) 8Be and D(γ, n) 1H photoneutron sources which use 2.75 MeV gamma rays from 24Na have been measured with a 3He ionization chamber. A data analysis procedure was developed for dealing with distortions due to severe gamma pileup. The measured spectra are compared to spectra calculated from neutron transport in Be and D 2O. Peak energies for 24NaBe and 24NaD were 957 ± 9 and 245 ± 9 keV, respectively, which may be compared with the calc ulated peak energies of 968 and 265 keV. The average energies for the experimental spectra were 798 ± 71 average energies from the calculated spectra were 796 and 189 keV for 24NaBe and 24NaD, respectively.
