Abstract

We show that an exact analytical solution exists for the one-angle Gutschick-Wiegel phase function. The analytical solution exhibits certain symmetries in the resulting transfer matrix, which may be exploited to reduce memory and CPU time demand. Such savings can be substantial, especially in the two-angle problems. We computed the scattering phase functions for several theoretical and agricultural crop canopies and found the re-emission character of most vegetation canopies to be rather strongly anisotropic.
