Abstract

Because of the occurence of interesting phenomena in multimode lasers, greater attention is being paid to this problem in the literature. The two-mode laser was studied by Singh and Zubairy [1] by extending the Scully-Lamb [2] theory of one-mode laser. They restricted their analysis to the case of upper level pumping only. Chu and Su [3] studied the operation of a two-mode laser considering the case where all the three levels are being pumped. In the master equation they obtained, in addition to the terms representing one-photon processes, there were also terms which represented two-photon processes between the modes. These two-photon terms were absent from the treatment of Ref. 1. Due to the presence of two-photon process terms in the master equation, the authors of Ref. 3 failed to obtain an exact expression for the steady state probability distribuition function, p(nl,n2).
