Abstract

We study the operation and the photon statistics of a single-mode two-photon laser, using both the exact and the effective interaction hamiltonians. We obtain simple analytical expressions of the mean photon number and of the photon-number variance from both hamiltonians. The exact (effective) hamiltonian predicts that the two-photon laser can (cannot) build up from a vacuum without triggering, and the normalized photon-number variance is 11 8 ( 3 2 ) far above “threshold”. The domain of validity of the effective hamiltonian for the photon-number variance is found to be much smaller than that for the mean photon number.
