Abstract
Monodirectional effective escape probabilities, involving line-of-sight-integrated escape factors, are calculated for the highly anisotropic source represented by C III emission at the solar limb as a concrete example of the application of such probabilities. Predicted intensity variations of C III lines with limb distance are obtained using a spherical shell model, showing several interesting features which may be observable with appropriate instruments. Among these are expected enhancements of extreme ultraviolet lines at 884.5 and 1308.7 A, and local limb-brightening and limb-darkening effects in optically thick lines, which may provide sensitive constraints on the solar C III emission distribution. Comparisons are made with available observations.
