Abstract
A simple formula is derived for the escape probability of photons in optically thick resonance lines of hydrogenic ions. The result is valid whenever quasi-static Stark broadening predominates in the line wings, a condition that is satisfied in most laser-produced plasmas. In contrast to impact (Lorentzian) broadening, Stark broadening tends to decrease the probability of photon escape as the plasma density increases.
