Abstract
Owing to the recent experimental development of pulsed Fourier-transform ESR, the well-known method of echo envelope modulation (EEM) can be used for a systematic investigation of quadrupole interactions in metastable photo-excited molecules. The first highly resolved NQR spectra of deuterated dibromobenzophenone (DBB) are reported. Deuteron NQR is particularly useful for structural investigations because the principal field gradient axis is coincident with the CD bond direction in aromatic molecules. Obviously the EEM method is not restricted to microwave transitions but can also be used to study hyperfine interactions in short-lived excited diamagnetic states. Under favorable experimental conditions, photon echo modulation can be followed over 100 μs, thus enabling high-resolution NQR spectroscopy. The potential of the method is demonstrated for the system Pr 3+:YAlO 3.
