Abstract
BVRI observations of known and suspected variables in the globular cluster 47 Tuc are described. Twelve period determinations were made, seven of which are new. The non-Mira stars are found to vary in a semi-regular manner, regardless of period. Values of Terr, Mbol and Q, the pulsation constant, are derived by combining the BVRI with JHKL observations made near the same epoch. The results strongly favour pulsation in an overtone mode for both the Mira and semi-regular variables in 47 Tuc. There is also evidence of mode ‘switching’ for V4.
