Cook, Allan F. ; Millman, Peter M. Abstract A good transmission grating spectrogram of a Perseid meteor has been obtained, the meteor also being well observed visually and by radar. The spectrogram has been subjected to a complete photometric reduction. From the zero-order image the light-curve of the meteor was found. The most prominent part of the spectrum consisted of the atomic lines of H I, Na I, Mg I, Mg II, Si I, Si II, Ca I, Ca ii, Fe I, and Fe ii. A background continuum was also found which can best be explained by a combination of a Planck curve at 7000 K and the first and second positive groups of bands of molecular nitrogen, these bands being unresolved. Abundances of atoms in various excited states were deduced. The range in height was too small to permit any conclusions concerning changes in the spectrum with height, but some evidence does appear for relative intensity changes of two lines with luminosity.
