Abstract

Photolysis of maleic anhydride and maleimides in polar solvents (aliphatic alcohols and dimethylformamide) were investigated by ESR spectroscopy. In maleic anhydride-methanol solution, H· and ·CH 2OH radical adducts have been observed, [Display omitted] whereas solution in dimethylformamide leads to radical anions of maleic anhydride with both ring and ring opened structure. [Display omitted] In maleimide-alcohol solutions radical anions of maleimide, ṘHOH radicals and R-̇HOH adducts to maleimides have been detected. [Display omitted] In dimethyl formamide solution only radical anions of maleimides have been observed. Based on the experimental results, mechanisms for the formation of the radicals and the radical ions are proposed.
