Abstract

The photolysis of CCl 4, CF 2Cl 2 and CFCl 3 was studied at 22°C in the prescence of Br 2 in the pressure range 10–150 Torr. The competition between the primary photochemical processes, CCl dissociation, CCl 2 or C2Cl dissociation, is discussed. At long wavelengths (λ ⩾ 185 nm) the elimination of molecular Cl 2 occurs and this increases with the quantum energy. Two processes seem responsible for the formation of Cl 2 and one of these is pressure dependent.
