Abstract

Abstract A cationic chromophore [1-( N -methylpyridinio-4-yl)-2-( N -methylpyrrol-2-yl)ethene] (Me–Mepepy) photoisomerisable by visible light has been intercalated into transparent thin films of the layered MPS3 compounds (M = Mn, Cd). The photochemistry of Me–Mepepy has been studied in solution and in the intercalated state. In both cases, irradiation causes trans - to cis - isomerisation. When Me–Mepepy is intercalated, irradiation also modifies the interactions between the chromophores. Finally, irradiation of the MnPS 3 –Mepepy intercalate causes a modification of the value of the spontaneous magnetisation of the material.
