Abstract

A high resolution photoion yield curve for CO 2 + near threshold has been obtained utilizing a molecular beam sampling system and synchrotron radiation. Direct ionization processes leading to both the 2π 3 2 and 2π 1 2 ground states of the ion have been resolved. The ionization potentials of these states are observed to be 13.774±0.003 eV (900.1±0.2 Å) and 13.788±0.003 eV (899.2±0.2 Å) respectively. Strong autoionization features are observed near threshold which can be fitted to heretofore unassigned Rydberg series. The appearance potential curve for the production of O + from CO 2 has also been obtained and is analyzed in terms of a predissociative process.
