Abstract

1-Anilino-8-naphthalenesulfonate (ANS) was observed to undergo a number of photochemical processes, including ionization, dimerization and loss of sulfonate. A mechanism that involves monophotonic ionization is proposed for the photo-induced dimerization of ANS. Photoionization of ANS was demonstrated by the reduction of silver ions in solution, which in turn was verified by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.
