Abstract

A photographic grid technique has been used to determine the specimen shear strain in Hopkinson-bar torsion tests on high strength steel specimens at a shear strain rate of ∼1000/s. Shear strains at fracture were of the order of 5% and no localisation of plastic flow was observed immediately preceding fracture. The results are compared with those obtained previously for a lower strength RHA steel where the local shear strain immmediately preceding fracture was of the order of 500%.
