Abstract

ABSTRACT Frederick Smith and Francis Walker were the first taxonomists to describe species of Japanese Ichneumonoidea, in 1874. We examine all of their available primary types deposited in the Natural History Museum, London, United Kingdom, confirm type status and provide stacked photos of each type, compiling all relevant taxonomic data. Two types of Walker’s species, Charops luteipes Walker, 1874 and Ischnocerus bicinctus, Walker, 1874, are missing. We propose the following taxonomic changes: Hoplocryptus variator (Walker, 1874) comb. nov.; Hoplocryptus pini (Momoi, 1973) syn. nov. (= H. variator comb. nov.); Ichneumon vexator Smith, 1874 = Melanichneumon tosaensis Uchida, 1935 stat. rev.; Mesoleptus laticinctus (Walker, 1874) is a valid species that is not found in Europe, so Mesoleptus angustulus (Förster, 1876) stat. rev. is the next available name for the European species; Netelia (Amebachia) smithii (Dalla Torre, 1901) comb. rev. = Netelia (Amebachia) yoshimatsui Konishi, 2010 syn. nov.; Netelia (Apatagium) coreana (Uchida, 1928) is raised from synonymy with N. smithii stat. rev.; and Therophilus semistriatus (Walker, 1874) comb. nov. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:22F74559-4F79-47B2-81DB-34C6C3B5729F
