Abstract

We have examined core-level photoemission spectra of 1T-TiSe 2 and 1T-TaS 2 to study chemical shifts associated with unusual superlattice formation. While large temperature-dependent core-level splitting was observed for TaS 2, temperature-dependent chemical shift was not observed for TiSe 2. On the other hand, angle-resolved valence-band photoemission spectra of TiSe 2 showed appearance of a new branch (band-folding) at the L points in the ordered phase at 50 K. These results suggest smaller lattice distortion in TiSe 2 than that in TaS 2.
