Abstract

Photoelectron energy distribution curves from Rh at photon energies $\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\omega}l9$ eV exhibit peaks originating from states 0.3 and 1.05 eV below the Fermi level ${E}_{F}$. For $\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\omega}g9.0$ eV, the initial states of the peaks are functions of $\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\omega}$. At $\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\omega}g10.5$ eV the two peaks have merged into a single broad peak 0.75 eV below ${E}_{F}$. Two other pieces of structure appear at approximately 2.4 and 3.9 eV below ${E}_{F}$. The results for Rh are compared to those for Pd with the help of the Pd density of states. It is found to be unlikely that the band structure of Rh can be derived from Pd through the use of a simple rigid-band model.
