Abstract

We have measured polycrystalline Fe, polycrystalline Zr, and ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{\mathrm{x}}$${\mathrm{Zr}}_{100\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{x}}$ metallic glasses (x=25,33,91) in the amorphous and crystalline state by means of uv photoemission and Auger electron spectroscopy. The results are analyzed in terms of the electronic density of states. The amorphous Fe-Zr samples show an increasing density of states at the Fermi level with increasing Fe content in agreement with calculations and specific-heat measurements.
