Abstract
Granulated gold films activated by cesium and oxygen are found to produce an intense photoelectron emission band about 100 nm wide at a wavelength of 530 nm with a sensitivity of about 4 mA/W in the visible range. This band is likely to be associated with excitation of surface plasmons. The results obtained indicate that, owing to surface photoeffect, gold films activated by Cs and O can be used as fast photocathodes with a time constant of several femtoseconds.
