Abstract

We have proposed (1) that the intense dark blue base form of the emeraldine oxidation state of polyaniline has the constitution represented by @@@@@ This structure has recently been confirmed by a step-wise synthesis of the polymer (2). Reduction of the polymer ultimately results in the formation of the pale yellow 1eucoemeraldine oxidation state (y = 1); oxidation results ultimately in the formation of the unstable intense violet perni-graniline oxidation state (y = 0). Protonation of the emeraldine base in ~ IM aqueous HCl (pH = 0) results in an increase in conductivity by a factor of ~* 1010 to a conductivity of ~* 5 S/cm2 with the formation of the emeraldine hydrochloride salt,
