Abstract

In view of the possibility of using the photoelastic effect to phase match nonlinear optical processes in cubic acentric materials, we measured the piezooptical coefficients of CuCl, CuBr and CuI flux grown single crystals. Among these materials, it is shown that the highest piezobirefringence, at constant stress, is achieved for cuprous iodide although the absolute magnitude of the piezooptical coefficients decreases with increasing atomic number of the halogen.
