Abstract

We have observed changes in the drift properties of negative ions in liquid helium when they are exposed to near-infrared radiation. The existence of this effect strongly supports the bubble model of the ion's structure. The results imply a bubble radius of 21.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5 \AA{} and a well depth of 1.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 eV.
