Abstract

SignificanceThe aim of the study was to present the results and own experience in the treatment of esophagus precancer and cancer diseases using ALA PDT. ApproachThe analysis covered 23 patients treated in 2006-2020 at our Center for Diagnostics and Laser Therapy. 5-ALA was given orally in the dose of 60 mg/kg body weight and irritated using DIOMED laser light (630 nm) delivered via a cylindrical diffuser 4–6 h after the first dose of PSs. ResultsThe median survival rate was 30.9 months if PDT was the initial treatment and 14.3 months if other methods were used first. The serious side effects of PDT were no observed. ConclusionsOur research results indicate the beneficial effects of ALA PDT in the treatment of esophageal diseases, especially in Barratt's esophagus, however, the use of this method in the treatment of esophageal cancer, also finds its place.
