Abstract

Triphenylphosphine oxide, as well as organic phosphates ((MeO)/sub 3/PO, (PrO)/sub 3/PO, and (PhO)/sub 3/PO), interact with the biradicals produced in the photochemistry of phenyl alkyl ketones (e.g., valerophenone), increasing the yields of photofragmentation and cyclization. The effect is presumed to result from the formation of a complex between the organophosphorus substrate and the intermediate biradical.
