Abstract
Photochemistry of Aromatic Nitro Compounds, XV. Photo‐yellowing of Musk Ambrette (4‐tert‐Butyl‐3‐methoxy‐2,6‐dinitrotoluene) in Methanolic Sodium Hydroxide SolutionPhotolysis (λ ≥ 280 nm) of musk ambrette (1) in 0.1 N methanolic sodium hydroxide solution gives rise (via photoreduction) to the corresponding azoxybenzene 2, which undergoes secondary photolysis to the hydroxyazobenzene 5, and to the by‐products 3 and 4 via intramolecular photo‐cyclizations.
