Abstract

Dihydrobenzofurans containing carbomethoxy-ethenyl at 2-position and phenyl and hydroxyl at 3-position were synthesized by photochemical methods and screened for antibacterial activity. These dihydrobenzofurans were moderately active against bacteria, both Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa), while compound 3-(6-chloro-3-hydroxy-3-phenyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-2-yl)acrylic acid methyl ester showed promising activity against both the Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
