Abstract

1. During irradiation with light with a wavelength <500 nm, phosphine hydride complexes MH4L4, where M=Mo or W and L=PMePh2 or 1/2Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2, react with molecular nitrogen with formation of trans-dinitrogen complexes M(N2)2L4. 2. The reactivity of phosphine hydride complexes of molybdenum in this photoreaction is higher than that of analogs of tungsten. 3. The formation mechanisms of trans-dinitrogen complexes of molybdenum with monodentate and bidentate ligands are very different.
