Abstract

Photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) vapor is examined on MgO, A12O3, SiO2, ZnO, and TiO2, which sensitize the reaction. The sorption and photopolymerization of MMA on MgO and A12O3 are dependent on the previous history of the materials. Only physical adsorption of MMA occurs with SiO2, the molecules being bound by hydrogen bonds. MgO, A12O3, and TiO2 show chemisorption of MMA. IR spectra indicate that PMMA chain growth occurs via gaseous and physically sorbed monomer molecules. It is considered that the reaction is initiated by absorption of light by the oxides or by the MMA molecules sorbed on them.
