Abstract

The s‐triazines atrazine, simazine and cyanzine are easily degraded by UV‐irradiation in aqueous titanium dioxide suspensions, because reactive OH radicals are generated under these conditions. A similar reaction can be observed in presence of H2O2, another OH radical source. In a slow process cyanuric acid is formed as end product. Desethylatrazine and desethylcyanazine were identified as intermediates. Dilute aqueous solutions of atrazine and cyanazine in the ppb‐range are effectively decontaminated by photocatalysis.
