Abstract

Oxide photocatalysts, Ba2Bi(V)Bi(III)O6 and Ba2Sb(V)Bi(III)O6, with the same monoclinic structure, were synthesized by a solid state reaction method. Their band gaps were determined by UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy to be about 2.2 and 1.7 eV, respectively. These photocatalysts showed photocatalytic H2 evolution from an aqueous CH3 OH solution under visible light irradiation. The rates of H2 evolution are 0.49 and 0.67 μmol/h for Ba2Bi(V)Bi(III)O6 and Ba2Sb(V)Bi(III)O6, respectively. They also showed activity for photocatalytic O2 evolution from an aqueous AgNO3 solution under visible light irradiation and the rates of O2 evolution were found to be 1.6 and 2.7 μ mol/h, respectively.
