Abstract

Zinc oxide (ZnO) powders were synthesized by solution combustion route using various amounts of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)-citric acid mixed fuel. The structural, microstructural, optical and photocatalytic properties of ZnO powders were analyzed by modern characterization methods. Single phase ZnO powders with wurtzite structure were crystallized at all fuel contents. The ZnO powders had a foamy microstructure with the high specific surface area of 371 m2/g at higher fuel contents. The increase of band gap energy from 3.11 to 3.18 eV with the increase of fuel contents was attributed to the reduction of particle size. The adsorption capacity and photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) dye increased from 5 to 40% and 95–100%, respectively, with fuel contents.
