Abstract
Both sphere and plate like bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized with controlled morphology under ambient conditions. The samples were characterized by using x-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and pH of the point of zero charge (pHpzc). This study evaluated the photocatalytic activity of BiOI towards the degradation of an antibiotic, ciprofloxacin, under indoor fluorescent lamp and various parameters such as antibiotic initial concentration, catalyst dosage and contact time. It was found that sphere-like BiOI exhibited better photocatalytic activity than plate-like BiOI. The reusability of the photocatalysts was also investigated and revealed a consistency in the performance of the subject material.
