Abstract

Bismuth ferrite (BIFEO), Barium doped bismuth ferrite (BBIFEO) and Calcium doped bismuth ferrite (CBIFEO) nanoparticles (NPs) named BIFEO, BBIFEO and CBIFEO are synthesized via the Sol-gel method. The Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed flower-like morphology. The Ba2+ and Ca2+ dopants have decreased the band gap energy of undoped rhombohedral ferrate NPs leading to a high efficiency for the breakdown of methylene blue under the influence of visible-light. The BIFEO, BBIFEO and CBIFEO NPs showed degraded efficiency of 58 %, 83.4 % and 98.7 % in Methyl blue (MB) dye under Visible-light. The higher degradation of Ca and Ba-doped NPs proved that Ba2+ andCa2+ions have enhanced the photocatalytic activity of undoped spinal ferrite NPs. The doped material is therefore very advantageous for the degradation of dyes under visible-light irradiation, among other photocatalytic applications.
