Abstract
Observations of the 3d photoabsorption spectra of isoelectronic Eu2+ and Gd3+ are reported. Their theoretical positions and relative intensities based on the 3d104f7 to 3d94f8 transition array are given and found to be in good agreement with the experimentally observed principal features. The 3d photoabsorption of the trivalent Eu is discussed and compared with that of trivalent Yb.
