Abstract

The trans-cis photo-isomerization effect on properties of a ferroelectric liquid crystal doped with photo-active azobenzene molecules is investigated by optical and spontaneous polarization measurements. The results show that the photo-isomerization of azobenzene molecules produces changes on structural as well as ferroelectric properties of the SmC* phase. An increase in the spontaneous polarization under UV light is observed, in contrast with the commonly photo-induced effect reported in ferroelectric liquid crystals doped with photosensitive molecules where the spontaneous polarization reduces under UV light. According to our results, the photo isomerization is accompanied by a significant change in the transverse dipole moment of azo-molecules, which contributes to increase PS.
