Abstract
Summary Today, perfect surface quality of webs of material such as paper, plastic, rubber, metal, textiles, and similar, can no longer be checked by man, due to considerable web speeds. To overcome this, an opto-electronic type of testing procedure can be used, where photo-electronic scanning devices take over the task of man. To facilitate differentiation of defects, photo-electronic and optomechanical scanning systems are available. Technical details of these systems will be discussed. In addition, special technical questions, for example, concerning the influence of the web speed on the scanning sensitivity, will be dealt with in detail.
