Abstract
In this paper the authors investigated photo-elastically on the sectional stresses of rail at the joint part, and the distributions of stress around the bolt-holes and the fish plates. First, the relations between the locations of sleeper and wheel load and the concentrated stresses around the bolt-holes were discussed by means of the two dimensional photo-elasticity. Next the distributions of the sectional stress of rail and fish plate were studied by the three dimensional photo-elastic experiments for the cases that the wheel load acted on the rail joint under the same conditions as the practical one.
