Abstract

The kinetics of the photo-dimerization of solid C 60 under 488 nm laser irradiation is studied by Raman scattering and is identified with a first-order reaction between one monomer in the first excited triplet state and the second monomer in the ground state (e.g. 3M*+M→D). The photo-dimerization process is limited by the photoexcitation step, and the rate constant is found proportional to the incident light flux, indicating that a single photon is involved.
