Abstract

This chapter discusses the reinstatement of Photius. A difficulty for the Emperor Basil was to gain from Pope John an unconditional confirmation of his consent to the reinstatement of Photius. At the Council of 869 a bishop on Photius' side, Zacharias of Chalcedon, had submitted instances in church history where the decisions of past synods had been amended later. At the final session the council acclaimed the universal jurisdiction of Photius as ecumenical patriarch. The reinstatement of Photius after the death of Ignatius led Photius into a situation where cooperation with Emperor Basil I was necessary for his own survival and tranquility of the Church in the capital.
