Abstract
Phosphorus is essential for all life, and global food production is dependent on it. The main source of phosphorus, phosphate rock, is, however, a finite resource, that accumulated over millions of years and is thus the object of an ongoing debate regarding the long-term development of phosphorus supplies. Most of the phosphorus mined from phosphate rock is used in the production of mineral fertilisers. The next major industrial application is in detergents. The use of phosphorus in fertilisers makes this element a key focus of global food security.
