Abstract

Summary Two sets of experiments were carried out in an attempt to find a simple, efficient antidote for phosphorus burns. It was realised that the use of a 5 per cent solution of copper sulphate was highly toxic. A solution of 5 per cent sodium bicarbonate + 1 per cent hydroxi-ethyl-cellulose + 3 per cent copper sulphate fulfils all criteria outlined in our introduction. Lauryl sulphate when added to the solution in order to decrease surface tension of the phosphorus granules, completes the neutralisation process of the burning phosphorus.
