Abstract

Operating polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) at temperatures of above 100 °C can be beneficial over low-temperature operation. However, different operating temperatures require also different kinds of electrolytes. For operating PEFCs at temperature in-between 150 and 200 °C, typically phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazole is the electrolyte of choice. Unfortunately, state-of-the-art platinum catalysts are deactivated by adsorption of phosphate species on their active catalyst sites, thus the overall performance of the fuel cell system drops. In order to overcome this hurdle, it is necessary to identify suitable catalyst systems with high tolerance towards phosphate poisoning.
