Abstract
1. 1. A study has been made of [ 32P] efflux from single muscle fibers of the barnacle Balanus nubilus. 2. 2. The efflux curve is a composite of three components, with t 1 2 of 3.7,10 and 131 min. A steady state value is reached within 60–70 min after loading of the fiber with [ 32P]-PO 4. 3. 3. External application of ouabain or iodocetate is ineffective. 4. 4. Internal application of cAMP-protein kinase catalytic subunit is also ineffective. 5. 5. External application of caffeine stimulates the efflux of [ 32P] rather mildly. 6. 6. The provisional conclusion is that very little of the injected [ 32p] is available for extrusion following its equilibration internally.
