Abstract

Nuclear resonance inelastic X-ray scattering of synchrotron radiation at the 14.4125 keV nuclear resonance of 57Fe was used for the direct measurement of the Fe-projected phonon or vibrational density of states (VDOS) of nanoscale Tb/Fe multilayers (MLs) with various layer thicknesses ( t Tb=14–50 Å, t Fe=10–50 Å). The VDOS was found to be a sensitive probe for the amorphous-to-crystalline structural transition of Fe that occurs in these MLs with increasing Fe layer thickness near t Tb≈25 Å.These results are confirmed by 57Fe conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy.
