Abstract

We show that the most striking of the phonon anomalies observed in the far-infrared c-axis conductivity of underdoped YBa 2 Cu 3 O y can be naturally and probably uniquely explained within a model based on the assumption that even the closely spaced copper-oxygen planes of this compound are only weakly (Josephson) coupled along the c-direction.
