Abstract

Phonetic symbolism is an hypothesis that sounds have symbolic connotations which are the same in all languages (Taylor & Taylor, 1965). The present study was designed to explore whether the graphic representation of Chinese also has symbolic connotations by translating into Chinese 20 pairs of English opposites (such as hot-cold and up-down). Two questionnaires were prepared, one listing the English pairs accompanied by the Chinese characters and the other listing the English pairs and the romanized representation of the Chinese characters (using the Yale system of romanization). The order of the English pair next to the corresponding Chinese pair was determined with a table of random numbers.
