Abstract

What started as a workshop of a play about a Chinatown fire was now ember and ashes, after the wildfire of dramaturgical questions from my actors and director. When a playwright neglects to fireproof his script, he's asking for trouble, and I had left a huge fire hazard in my script. I had tried to write a history lesson rather than a dramatic play and so, on the first day of the workshop, my cast and crew exposed the dry pages and frayed wires and sparked a four-alarm fire.
