Abstract

New chemical and crystallographic data are presented for a phlogopitic mica from Jan Mayen Island in the North Atlantic Ocean. Consideration of the stability limits of such material and its petrological and geotectonic environment of occurrence leads to the proposal of a mantle origin for this mineral, and possibly the fulfilment of a critical role in the genesis of potash-rich basaltic magma beneath the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
