Abstract

64 male subjects took the Hostile Press measure of fear of failure (Birney, Burdick, & Teevan, 1969) and the Philosophies of Human Nature (Wrightsman, 1964). It was predicted that persons high on Hostile Press would perceive the world as a hostile place and thus would have a generally less favorable view of human nature—would score low on the Philosophies of Human Nature. In general, the data bore out the hypothesis although the authors felt that the results on Independence did not fit previous research and theory as to the conforming behaviors of persons high in Hostile Press.
